Political Correctness - Criticism of the concept of political correctness
| Political correctness is how to use language in the discourse of the public, whose stated goal is to preserve respect and tolerance for members of minorities, in particular for vulnerable groups. The modern meaning of this term was formed as a result of disputes between conservatives (for example, Allan Bloom, Dinesh D'souza) and representatives of the new left in the United States in the 1980s. In the UK and the USA, the term is commonly used as a term with a negative connotation. It is used by people with right-wing views as a kind of criticism of activities aimed at combating sexism, racism and homophobia. Critics of political correctness claim that too "soft" treatment of minorities causes resistance from the rest of society to the aforementioned, since the general public may recognize that minorities have privileges. Some people, especially conservative ones, compare political correctness to Newspeak. These circles perceive this negatively, as they perceive it as a ban on criticizing certain groups because of their background, history, culture, or behavior. Critics sometimes refer to political correctness as censorship or uncensored, and sometimes believe that it restricts freedom of speech and expression. Some linguists point to the incorrect application of the principles of political correctness to terms that do not have a negative connotation in a given culture. Jerzy Bialczyk believes that traditional words to describe nationality should not be removed from the language, but should be used in a positive context. Application examples The Cleveland Indians team logo called "Chief Wahoo" was considered politically incorrect by many, especially Native Americans. In 1973, the logo was redrawn to make it more politically correct, but this modified logo is also controversial. Having two names for Macedonia was a unique problem in the world - most countries use the name Republic of Macedonia in diplomatic relations. The alternative name "The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" was developed as a result of the activities of, among others, the Greek authorities, on whose territory the region of Macedonia and part of the historical region called Macedonia are located. The essence of political correctness, which should lead to the use of the latter name, is the numerous disputes, mainly regarding the use of the term "Macedonians" to describe both the Slavic nation and the ethnic group inhabiting Greece.
